Pressure and Choking in Darts of College Athletes: The Interplay of Self-Enhancement

Abstract: The problem of diminished performance under stress, often referred to as 'choking under pressure,' is a significant issue in the realm of sports psychology, especially during high-stakes competitions. Researchers have thoroughly explored various factors contributing to this issue, yet the role of self-enhancement in sporting competition scenarios hasn't received the same level of scrutiny. Characterized by an individual's inclination to emphasize positive outcomes for self-esteem protection and setting lofty personal standards, self-enhancement is increasingly becoming a focal point in the study of choking. Our research draws from the self-focus theory and related studies, probing the mediating influence of self-enhancement on the relationship between high-pressure environments and choking tendencies. In our study, we used an experimental design based on dart-throwing as a representative model for sports performance under stress, aiming to elucidate the role of self-enhancement as a mediating variable in such settings. Involving fifty collegiate athletes, the study required participants to first complete a self-enhancement personality measure. They then engaged in dart-throwing tasks under two different conditions: one with low pressure and another with high pressure. Using statistical analysis tools SPSS 27.0 and Process 4.2, we discovered a link between high levels of self-enhancement, increased self-perceived cognitive pressure (β=.43, p<.01), and a higher chance of choking (β=.39, p<.01). The findings reveal that self-enhancement partially mediates the relationship between perceived pressure and performance, accounting for a variance of 30% in sports settings. It suggests that self-enhancement serves as a connecting factor between pressure perception and choking. These insights into self-enhancement tendencies provide valuable perspectives for designing future interventions to help mitigate choking. Such efforts could, in turn, potentially boost the competitiveness and longevity of collegiate athletes' performances.

Building Bridges: Fostering a Positive Relationship Between Interns and Supervisors in Exercise and Sport Science

Abstract: The objective of this investigation was to gain an understanding of the learning experiences of undergraduate students pursuing exercise and sport science during their fitness professional internship. The study aimed to shed light on various aspects, including the personal development of the interns, the influence of supervision (where an academic supervisor served as a dual professional), and the feedback they received concerning their growth as fitness professionals. To achieve this objective, a cohort of 25 exercise and sport science interns actively participated in a focus group discussion. Through this qualitative approach, the interns' perceptions of the internship experience were explored, leading to the identification of four significant themes. The first theme that emerged from the interns' perspective was a favourable rapport with supervision. They highlighted the importance of having a positive and supportive relationship with their supervisors, which contributed to their overall learning experience. This finding emphasizes the role of effective mentorship in fostering professional growth. The second theme that emerged was a sense of responsibility for their learning. The interns expressed a proactive attitude towards their own education, recognizing the need to take ownership of their learning process and actively seek opportunities for growth. The third theme identified was contentment. The interns reported a high level of satisfaction with their internship experience, indicating that they felt fulfilled and engaged during their time as fitness professionals. This finding underscores the importance of creating an enriching and rewarding environment for interns. The fourth and final theme cantered around the acquisition of professional skills. The interns acknowledged the significant development of their skills and competencies as fitness professionals during the internship. These findings hold insights for both academic and workplace supervisors in the field of fitness professionals. Supervisors can enhance the effectiveness of internships and ultimately contribute to the growth and success of fitness professionals. It is important to note that while this investigation primarily focused on the experiences of exercise and sport science interns, the outcomes have potential implications for other cooperative learning environments. Specifically, these findings can be generalized to similar settings within the realms of health science and wellness. By recognizing the transferability of these insights, educators and supervisors in related fields can adapt and apply these principles to foster effective learning experiences for their students and interns.

Abstract: Background: The research scholar selected this present research study to explore the relationship between selected emotional intelligence variables among sportspersons of selected three different games and sports. Objective; To determine the coefficient of correlation between selected Emotional intelligence variables among boxing, wrestling, and taekwondo players Measure; According to the supervisor's and research experts' guidance, the research scholar used the emotional intelligence scale (EIS; Anukool Hyde et, al. 1971) based on 5 items Likert scale. The above-mentioned Questionnaire had high reliability and acceptable construct validity (r =.0.88, V = 0.93). Therefore, the scales were found to have adequate properties and to be applicable in research and practice. Hypothesis; It was hypothesized that a statistically significant positive strong correlation would be found between selected Emotional intelligence variables among selected sportspersons. Statistics; To calculate the mean and correlation the research scholar used descriptive statistics (M, SD), and Pearson product-moment correlation in the IBM® SPSS Statistics analysis package. Results: In the present research study, revealed that there was a statistically significant coefficient correlation found between selected Emotional intelligence variables among boxing, wrestling, and taekwondo players, Boxing (M = 135.66, ± SD = 54.83), Wrestling (M = 123.11, ± SD = 50.21), and Taekwondo (M = 144.66, ± SD = 60.72), and Pearson product-moment correlation was found between cumulative score among boxing and wrestling (r = 986**, p ≤ 0.01), boxing and taekwondo (r = 994**, p ≤ 0.01), and the wrestling and taekwondo (r = 989**, p ≤ 0.01), The result indicated that a statistically significant very positive correlation was found between the selected psychological variables among boxing, wrestling and taekwondo players at significance level 0.01.
